Barossa Shiraz 2002 |
 |
A great example of typical Barossa Valley shiraz, from a great vintage.
“
This is seriously good value and you are crazy if you miss it!” was
the verdict from independent Australian wine critic Ric Einstein when
he tasted the wine shortly before its release.
“
The wine has beautiful construction and balance, and it’s a perfect
case of letting the fruit speak,” Ric wrote.
“
Highly recommended with **** for value.”
The two parcels of shiraz which make up this wine came from older vines
in the Auricht and Sonntag family vineyards near Tanunda. The component
wines were matured in French and American oak hogsheads for 12 months,
and blended just before bottling.
Winemaker Paul Lindner describes this shiraz as “an elegant yet
powerful wine, which sums up the superb 2002 vintage”.
Here are Paul’s tasting notes:
-
Colour: Deep crimson with a youthful purple hue.
- Nose: Lifted blueberries,
raspberries and mulberry fruits dominate the aroma with Chrissy pudding
and lovely vanillin and biscuity oak completing
the picture.
- Palate: The fruits flow on to a rich and velvety palate
balanced with lovely fine oak tannins and a long, briary, fruit-driven
finish with
hints of black pepper.
The wine is 14.5 per cent alcohol by volume and has excellent cellaring
potential.
Its recommended retail price is $19.90 a bottle and it can be bought
either in a three bottle sample pack ($59.70) or by the case ($238.80)
direct from the winery.
This is the second wine to bear the Eden Springs Barossa label, which
is reserved for premium wines sourced from other winemakers in
the Barossa zone. Production was limited to 350 cases.
