A New Era

After an unexpected hiatus, Eden Springs is back in business.

2006 marked a new era for the company, with a change in ownership to wine lover Ray Gatt. The sale followed the untimely passing of Richard Wiencke who, with his partner Meredith Hodgson, nurtured the vines on the High Eden property and created the Eden Springs label.

"Richard was the front-line force behind the vineyard and winery, dedicated to both the property he loved and the art of winemaking," Meredith said.

"He had a passion for the wines produced at Eden Springs, and a strong sense of commitment to his customers and the Eden Springs brand. I was unable to bring the skills and resources to the business that it needed, so decided to concentrate on my career in health services and hand the winery over to someone who could continue Richard's vision."

"Ray shares Richard's passion and enthusiasm for premium winemaking, and also our belief in the quality and outstanding potential of High Eden varietals. I wish him well for the future and am sure that, under his leadership, Eden Springs will thrive and reach its full potential."

With vintage 2007 down, and 2008 on its way, Ray and the new Eden Springs team are continuing the work started by Richard and Meredith, and are determined to achieve a long and successful future for Eden Springs.

"This is an exciting opportunity for me. It's not often you get to be a part of something as special as Eden Springs," Ray said.

"The High Eden vineyards are unique, and produce fruit with varietal characteristics not found elsewhere - either in the Barossa or other wine regions. As a boutique label with a loyal following, the chance to take the reins of the Eden Springs brand is also a rare opportunity. It's one I'm truly grateful for, and I'd like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the previous owners in building Eden Springs and its reputation for premium wines."

"My aim is to consolidate that reputation and build on the existing quality of Eden Springs wines. I'm in it for the long-term and, along with the rest of the new Eden Springs team, I'm determined to make Eden Springs one of Australia's most sought-after wine brands. We've got great plans underway, with improvements in the vineyard and a dynamic new winemaking team already producing a range of outstanding regional varietals."

Three of those wines have just been released, the first for Eden Springs label in two years. Full-bodied and complex, the 2006 High Eden Riesling shows the benefits of a year’s bottle age on this renowned varietal, while the 2007 High Eden Riesling is a perfumed dynamo of youthful freshness. The 2005 High Eden Cabernet is sheer elegance in a bottle, layering rich fruit, oak and chocolate flavours with soft, fine tannins.

All single-vineyard varietals, the wines display the distinctive characteristics of the High Eden sub-region and are already receiving accolades. Silver for the 2006 High Eden Riesling at the New Zealand International Wine Show was followed by Bronze for the 2004 High Eden Cabernet Sauvignon at both the Winewise Small Vigneron Awards and the Australian Small Winemakers Wine Show, capped off by Gold for the 2007 High Eden Riesling at the recent 2007 Barossa Wine Show. Pipped by a mere half-point, the 2007 High Eden Riesling was also runner-up to the Trophy winner for the Best Dry White Varietal Riesling, Current Vintage.

"We’re all very proud of these first new Eden Springs wines, the results of 18 months of hard work from the whole Eden Springs team. They’re just a taste of things to come - an expanded range of premium, estate-grown Eden Springs wines. We hope you enjoy them, and also the classic back vintages we currently have on offer."
